For these observations I chose to shadow three administrators who have a wealth of experience. The observations provided a snapshot of the administrative duties which often occur in an educational setting. The observations were interesting and informative.
I chose to observe and interview two Assistant Principals and one Principal. The Assistant Principals focused on discipline interventions and conflict resolution. They also were active in duty stations throughout the school. During the AP post observation interviews, I talked with both Assistant Principals about their behavior interventions, consequences and school wide behavior management plans which are implemented at their schools. This information was valuable to an upcoming administrator. I hope to incorporate some of their strategies one day soon.
The Assistant Principals also were in charge of textbooks and their distribution to staff members. During the interview, I looked over the documents for textbook inventories. The Assistant Principal keeps this information on the computer. It is easily accessible when needed. I asked the AP about other duties and responsibilities under her job title. She stated that she also has to order textbooks each year based on estimated student count for each class.
After discussing the observation with the Principal, it is obvious that she must wear many hats. Her duties were not as defined and clear as the Assistant Principals. The Principal is responsible for all events and situations in the school. Therefore, I found this job to be the most unclear as far as specific duties and responsibilities. The principal’s meeting was most interesting. It was a privilege to be able to attend the meeting and experience the administrative role. When asking the Principal questions during the post observation interview, I wanted to know her favorite part of the job as well as the most challenging part. The principal’s favorite part of the job is building positive relationships between teachers, parents and students. The most challenging part is dealing with difficult parents and teachers. However, I felt the principal handled the parent concern, about homework, with respect and concern of all parties involved.
These observations allowed me to observe individuals who are respected in their administrative positions. The shadowing experience allowed me the opportunity to “get a real feel” of the administrators role in the school setting.
